Full Subject-Based Banding in 2021

FULL SBB PILOT from 2020 onwards

PLMGS(Sec) is one of the 28 secondary schools selected by the Ministry of Education to start piloting aspects of Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB) from 2020 onwards.

Purpose of Full SBB

With Full SBB, we are moving towards one secondary education, with many subject bands, to better meet our students’ learning needs, without labels. This is part of the broader shift in our education system to recognise the strengths and interests of our children, to help them build their confidence and develop an intrinsic motivation to learn for life in them.

By 2021, the pilot schools will have fully implemented the following aspects of Full SBB:
  • Organising Secondary 1 form classes in new ways;
  • Offering of Humanities subjects at a more demanding level from Secondary 2.

Full SBB Pilot in PLMGS(Sec) from 2020 onwards

Organising Secondary 1
form classes in new ways
from 2021 onwards

As part of the pilot, our school will implement reorganised form classes at Secondary 1.

This is applicable to Secondary 1 students entering our school in 2021.

  • There will be a mix of students from different academic courses in the same form class. As such, each class will have students who joined the school via the Express, Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) Courses.
  • These students will experience their common curriculum subjects (Art, Character and Citizenship Education, Design and Technology, Food and Consumer Education, and Physical Education) in their form class as well.

Benefits from new ways of organising form classes

  • This common learning experience creates a valuable setting for students to mingle, build meaningful friendships, and appreciate different perspectives. It can also help reduce the inadvertent labelling associated with streaming.

Offering of Humanities subjects
at a more demanding level from Secondary 2 from 2020 onwards

As part of the pilot, our school will allow Secondary 2 students the opportunity to take Humanities subjects at a more demanding level if they meet the requirements.

This is applicable to students who are in Secondary 2 Normal (Academic) from 2020 onwards.

  • Eligibility criteria based on Sec 1 academic results
English Literature / Geography / History
    • At least 75% overall in the subject
    • A positive learning attitude to cope with the higher academic demand

  • Process for taking up the option

Eligible N(A) students will receive an application form after the Sec 1 year-end examinations, based on the following criteria

    • At least 75% overall in the subject
    • Positive learning attitude to cope with the higher academic demand

  • Once a student offers Geography/History/Literature at a more demanding level, she would sit for the same examination as students in Express for that subject.
  • Should she be unable to cope after one year, she would be advised to take the subject at the Normal (Academic) level.
  • Humanities subjects at a more demanding level will be made available for Normal (Technical) Secondary 2 students starting from 2021.
