East Zone Centre of Excellence (Creative Arts)

Brief History  
Paya Lebar Methodist Girls’ School (Pri & Sec) was appointed as the East Zone Centre of Excellence for the Creative Arts (COECA@PL) in 2008. COECA@PL organises and spearheads performing arts programmes impacting staff and pupils in the East Zone schools. It was later expanded to include the COECA@HGS focusing on Arts Education, the Art Satellite focusing on Visual Arts and the Music Satellite focusing on Music.

The COECA Steering Committee provides direction to the four Working Committees to plan and organise programmes in the areas of Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Music and Arts Education. Mrs Marian Chia, Supt/E5, is the advisor of the COECA, while the position of Chairperson of the Steering Committee is rotated annually amongst the Principals. Mrs Quek Li Gek, Principal, PLMGS (Sec), is the Chairperson of the COECA Steering Committee.
 
Roles of COECA
  • Spearhead improvement in quality of teaching and learning in the creative arts
  • Develop learning models, pedagogies and approaches related to the area of excellence for schools to learn from and adopt
  • Raise teacher competencies to bring about quality teaching in every school
  • Work in synergy with other COEs, MOEHQ and Professional bodies to support and level up schools
  • Provide opportunities for students to excel in their areas of talents / abilities
  • Create opportunities for collaboration with and among schools
  • Provide expert advice and guidance to develop a strong and vibrant arts scene

Our Flagship Programmes
  • SSO@PLMGS – an outreach concert for students, teachers and the community
  • Roving Art Exhibition – selected art pieces are roved to collaborating schools and the National Library Board building
  • East Zone Professional Sharing – a professional development programme for the arts educators in collaboration with the National Gallery Singapore 
  • Year-end Learning Journey for Arts Educators (e.g. RICE Company in 2018, SOTA in 2019 and Esplanade – Theatres by the Bay in 2020)
